Mystery Of The World – Humans explore space to uncover the secrets of the universe and look for other life outside Earth.
But in truth, there are still many mysteries that have not been revealed about our planet, including what is hidden in the expanse of bluish salt water – which reflects the color of the sky. At the bottom of the seas, also oceans.
Approximately 71 percent of the Earth’s area is ocean, and humans have only explored less than 10 percent. The remaining 90 percent are still in the middle of nowhere.
At a depth of many kilometers, the sea can present views that humans have never imagined.
Here are nine great mysteries hidden at the bottom of the ocean, as quoted from the Listverse site , Tuesday (13/6/2024):
1. Mysterious Sea Creature in the Shape of a Blob
A video circulating recently shows a mysterious creature that is large, amorphous, aka unclear in shape, and whose body is more like a blob – floating near an oil drilling rig.
This creature attracted the attention of many people. A number of people suspect that it is an unknown species from the seabed.
Others thought it was proof of the existence of ‘aliens’.
However, before long, scientists offered a scientific explanation. They said that this creature was not mysterious at all, but a giant jellyfish.
Experts even show evidence that the creature is pulsating and moving. Also visible are the reproductive organs. However, scientists have not yet identified the species.
This answer also doesn’t solve the puzzle. Moreover, there were no jellyfish or similar creatures nearby.
Allegedly, the creature stayed near the rig for some time, even showing off its gonads.
It is possible that the drilling activity disturbed the peace of the sea dwellers, and the creature came to investigate.
What he did could also be an attempt to scare away the ‘bullies’.
2. Pyramids
There is a story about a strange crystal pyramid found in the ocean, which is thought to be near the Bermuda Triangle. Supposedly, scientists knew about it, but didn’t examine it more closely — that’s what conspiracy theorists think.
However, stories about crystal pyramids under the sea continue to emerge. And none of it is accompanied by valid evidence. The origin of this
fake story, aka hoax , can be traced back several decades. The story goes that there is a magical giant ball above it. But, once again, there was never any proof.
Leading scientists claim to know nothing about the pyramids. However, that doesn’t stop people from believing.
A number of them even believe that the crystal pyramid has a connection with aliens.
Eternal life
3. Immortal Beings
Turritopsis nutricula is a small sea jellyfish, its size is only 4-5 millimeters. What’s interesting about this species is that it cannot age biologically. Living an ‘eternal life’ — the exception is that when they suffer harm or are devoured by other creatures, they will definitely die.
This surprising fact became known after experts discovered a population explosion of this species, from research involving 4,000 Turritopsis nutricula .
This species is able to revert from the adult sexual stage to the larval stage. Generally, jellyfish will die after they have finished reproducing.
After they mature and mate, the jellyfish can repeat its biological cycle, regenerate all its body cells, and become young again. This kind of cell regeneration process is called transdifferentiation — cells that reach a certain stage can change into other, newer, younger cells.
A number of scientists are skeptical that there is an answer to the mystery of eternal life. However, others think humans can learn from these creatures — to fight the spread of cancer, for example.
4. Atlantis, Fact or Hoax
Many wild theories circulate about Atlantis . What makes sense to what cannot be accepted by reason.
Those who believe believe that Atlantis is in the Bermuda Triangle – even though in his dialogue ‘Timaeus and Critias’ Plato does not mention that location at all.
There are also those who believe that Atlantis is still preserved today, protected by a dome in the water.
Historian Bettany Hughes investigates the ancient myth of Atlantis. He thinks Plato probably got the idea from somewhere.
The island near ancient Greece known as Santorini was once known as Thera Island. The people who lived there were highly skilled traders, who took advantage of their geographical position close to three continents.
Not surprisingly, they are very rich and prosperous. Unfortunately, the residents of Theran don’t know they live right on top of a volcano.
The mountain erupted in 1620 BC, the explosion was large enough that the impact was felt almost throughout the world. Plato almost certainly knew about that.
The beautiful Thera was devastated. The rubble and its contents were preserved by ash, similar to what happened to Pompeii. The story of its destruction may have been an inspiration for Plato.
Throughout human history, it is difficult to determine how many civilizations or major cities were destroyed overnight by natural disasters.
Mermaid
5. Mermaids
This may be a scientific explanation for the mermaid legend: Sailors were out in the water for a long time, lonely, sometimes drunk. This condition has the potential to cause visual hallucinations. It could be that the sailors saw manatees or manatees as mermaids.
However, the sea is a very big place and only a small part of it has been explored by humans. The question is, could there be human-like creatures hidden in the ocean?
One of the United States government agencies, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which deals with environmental issues such as tsunamis and hurricanes, once uploaded an interesting and unusual article: about mermaids.
The post was titled, ‘Are Mermaids Real?’
“Beliefs about the existence of mermaids have emerged since the beginning of human existence. The magical female figures first appeared in cave paintings at the end of the Paleolithic period (Stone Age) around 30,000 years ago, when modern humans dominated the land, and perhaps, began to roam the oceans,” according to NOAA, as published by Discovery . com .
Half-human creatures, chimeras, are also often mentioned in mythology. Apart from mermaids, there were also centaurs, sages, wild satyrs, and minotaurs – terrifying bull-headed humans. And much more. “But are mermaids real? No evidence of these aquatic creatures has ever been found,” says NOAA, on its website.
6. Ocean Pressure
So much money has been spent on space exploration. What is not widely known is that expeditions to uncover the mysteries of the sea also require quite a lot of money.
Like just any space expedition, the challenges faced in exploring the ocean are no less dire.
One of the challenges is dealing with the pressure in the depths of the sea. Sophisticated equipment and cutting-edge technology are needed, even if only to explore the deep sea for a short time.
And that, isn’t the only potential danger humans face when exploring the ocean.
Sea Monsters
7. Sea Monster
Many people speculate about sea monsters. For example, the giant octopus Kraken. However, in reality, ‘normal’ fish can grow to terrifying sizes in the sea.
In fact, when compared, the size of even the largest dinosaurs may be ‘tinier’ than the currently known blue whales.
Scientists once discussed the possibility of giant creatures in the sea that have not yet been discovered at the Zoological Society of London (ZSL).
One of the speakers was palaeontologist Dr Darren Naish. “Not all of the reported sightings of ‘sea monsters’ can be said to be misinterpretations, ignorance or hoaxes , aka fake news,” he said as published in the Daily Mail .
At least, some of them are descriptions of real animals whose existence is not yet known.
“Moreover, a large number of large marine animals continue to be discovered, such as new types of whales and sharks. So, the idea that these ‘monster’ species are just waiting to appear is at least plausible,” said Naish.
8. The vastness of the ocean
This is what many people believe: 95 percent of the ocean has not been explored or explored by humans. Marine biologists feel that this statement is too simplistic.
Scientists today – using satellite equipment, radar and mathematical calculations, have succeeded in mapping the ocean terrain with a maximum resolution of 5 kilometers.
So far, the results are accurate up to a point. With it, marine biologists get the idea of trenches, troughs and seamounts — while continually updating their technology and equipment.
However, marine biologist John Copley admitted to Scientific American that, although today’s equipment is more sophisticated, it is true that we only know about five percent of the ocean’s contents — including the various creatures in it.
The search for the Malaysia Airlines plane MH370 which sank somewhere in the Indian Ocean, using the most sophisticated equipment available to search the ocean today, has not yet found results. In fact, the search zone may be less than one percent of the total ocean area on Earth.
In conclusion, the sea provides opportunities for unlimited exploration. Even though it took thousands of years and trillions of dollars, there are still many mysteries waiting to be uncovered.
Mysterious Voice
9. Bloops
Bloop is the name given to an ultra-low frequency, but very strong underwater sound that was detected by the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in 1997.
The sound was tracked to a remote point in the South Pacific Ocean.
According to NOAA’s description, the sound “increased rapidly in frequency over a minute and was wide enough to be heard by many sensors, with a range of more than 5,000 km.”
NOAA’s Dr Christopher Fox does not believe the source of the sound was man-made, such as a submarine or bomb, or a common geological event such as a volcano or earthquake. The characteristics of Bloop’s sound also do not resemble the sounds of living creatures.
Speculation also emerged about the strange sound.
Until finally, NOAA scientists claimed, the sound was just ice breaking, which was located several kilometers from the point of hearing.
The breaking ice creates a sound called an icequake.
